Color, energía y polémica en la Apertura
Energía. Fue la frase elegida por el Comité Organizador para promocionar los Juegos Panamericanos. Y nunca más acertada la idea. Porque si algo transmitió la fiesta de Apertura, juntamente con la ciudad de Río de Janeiro, es vitalidad y alegría.El prólogo estuvo a cargo de los medallistas Virna (voléibol) y Robinson Caetano (atletismo). Ambos atletas arengaron al público para ir calentando un clima que tendría su momento culmine con el ingreso de la delegación brasileña.
Un espectacular show de fuegos artificiales antecedió a la entonación artística del himno de Brasil que realizó con toda dulzura la cantante Elza Soares. Fue uno de los momentos más emotivos de la ceremonia porque los torcedores acompañaron con el sentir del pueblo.
El clima de fiesta del Maracaná tuvo un quiebre momentáneo con el ingreso del presidente Luiz Lula da Silva. La entrada del primer mandatario fue como si reavivara aquella furia desatada en el Mundial del 50 cuando el uruguayo Schiaffino inmortalizó el Maracanazo. Una lluvia de silbidos reprobó la imagen de Lula en las pantallas gigantes. Esto hizo desistir al funcionario del discurso de Apertura.
El ambiente se recuperó rápidamente con la presencia en la pista de Arnaldo Antunes y Ana Costa interpretando la canción oficial de Río 2007, "Viva essa energía". Allí el Maracaná recuperó su vida y los reclamos fueron extinguidos rápidamente.
El desfile de delegaciones se inició con Argentina. Los torcedores hicieron sentir la rivalidad en la bienvenida. Pero los silbidos se revirtieron cuando la abanderada Luciana Aymar y los atletas entendieron el juego y saludaron cordialmente. Los deportistas cubanos recibieron la mayor ovación, lógicamente detrás de Brasil.
El momento sublime llegó precisamente con la aparición en pista de los más de 600 atletas. El estruendo fue realmente conmovedor y sirvió para que la gente se mantenga conectada hasta el final de esta fiesta maravillosa.
La cultura y el colorido se unieron para edificar un marco maravilloso al show musical continuado. Fue un recorrido por la rica historia de Brasil, donde la emoción se posó en varios cariocas que no pudieron contener el llanto.
La palabra oficial llegó con los oradores Mario Vázquez Raña, presidente de la ODEPA, y el titular del Comité Olímpico Brasileño, Carlos Nuzman. El responsable del Comité Organizador también fue el encargado de abrir oficialmente los Juegos por la sorpresiva ausencia en el palco del presidente de Brasil, Luiz Ignacio LULA DA SILVA.
El cierre fue reservado para la vedette de los Juegos: la Antorcha Panamericana, que hizo su ingreso luego de recorrer 51. El equipo de voleibol que ganó el oro en Barcelona 92 fueron los privilegiados de ingresar la antorcha y el atleta Joaquim Cruz el dueño de encender el fuego Panamericano.
Daniela Mercury llevó el Marcaná hasta la locura cuando interpretó la tradicional canción Ciudade Maravillosa, junto con un elenco de danza formado por 4.500 participantes. La fiesta se cerró con el total de las delegaciones bailando en el terreno de juego de un Maracaná rindiendo tributo a los verdaderos protagonistas: los atletas.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- The Pan American Games got off to a sputtering start Saturday with baseball postponements and reports of a delay in televising gymnastics, one of the premier sports at the event.
Organizers postponed two baseball games -- the United States vs. the Dominican Republic and Brazil against Nicaragua -- after a power outage at the new venue. Lighting problems did not affect the earlier games between Panama and Cuba, and Venezuela against Mexico.
It was not the way the Brazilians wanted to begin the biggest sporting event they have ever hosted, particularly since they are seeking to stage the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics.
ESPN Brazil reported problems at another new venue, the Rio Multisport Arena, that led to the delay of television coverage of the men's team gymnastics competition Saturday. But much of the event wound up on TV.
Organizers said the delay was caused by problems with the broadcast cables inside the arena.
Basketball also is scheduled for that site, later in the games.
The U.S. baseball team of college players has not played since July 8 and was eager to get started. The postponement left them scrambling for a practice facility.
Their game was rescheduled for Sunday morning, one-half hour after Venezuela faces Panama. That game was set to start at 8 a.m. EDT.
The United States's previously scheduled game against Nicaragua has been pushed back to Monday.
"We still have to play the game, basically whether it's today or Tuesday or whenever," team spokesman Niall Adler said. "It's always been kind of a challenge throughout our three-week tour to be able to practice and play."
The opening ceremony was accompanied by a few problems Friday night at the famed Maracana Stadium, but was a spectacular show. Security was so strict that many fans couldn't get to the newly renovated stadium in time. The ceremony began late with many seats empty, and hundreds of would-be participants stuck in lines stretching for blocks outside, waiting to pass through metal detectors and inspection.
Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was booed every time his name was mentioned and he did not give the scheduled speech to officially open the games. He was hastily replaced by Brazilian Olympic Committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
The ceremony was preceeded by issues with transportation and infrastructure at other venues.Traffic jams on the streets and difficulties buying food and finding bathrooms inside the venues prompted a group of about 100 fans to protest on Friday.
"We want to eat! We want to eat!" they chanted at the Riocentro complex after the handball match between Brazil and Mexico. The concession stands available to the public were all closed, forcing fans to try to enter the press area and attempt to get food. They were denied access.
To fix that problem, organizers temporarily allowed the fans through a security checkpoint and into parts of the media area to get food on Saturday because the public food kiosk was closed due to what organizers called "an energy outage." The fans were lined up 30 deep at one concession stand.
